Advancing Early‑Career Scientists and Clinicians

THRIVE by ASBMR provides individualized mentorship and high‑quality professional development to early‑career scientists and clinicians from under‑resourced communities who work in biomedical and behavioral science. The program supports researchers whose interests align with the ASBMR mission and equips them with the tools, training, and connections needed to excel.

Program Goals

THRIVE Scholars enter a three‑year program designed to:

  • Support early‑career success by strengthening leadership skills and creating opportunities within ASBMR.
  • Reduce institutional barriers faced by scientists and clinicians from communities with limited access to training and support.
  • Build and sustain the workforce through structured professional development and one‑on‑one scientific and leadership mentorship.

ASBMR is committed to advancing bone, mineral, and musculoskeletal research and fostering a diverse, connected, and empowered global community.

Become a THRIVE Mentor

Professional Development & Scientific Training

THRIVE Scholars will:

  • Participate in a 10‑month virtual professional development series, featuring monthly sessions on leadership, mentorship, conflict management, influence, and more.
  • Receive travel support to attend an in‑person THRIVE networking event at the ASBMR Annual Meeting.
  • Be paired with senior ASBMR members for 1:1 mentorship, including the creation of an Individual Development Plan.
  • Receive up to $5,000 in grant funding to pursue scientific or technical training of their choice.
  • Gain priority consideration for ASBMR leadership opportunities, including committee roles, journal reviewer training tracks, and other society programs.

Who is eligible to participate as a THRIVE Scholar?

Early-career scientists (e.g., post-doctoral fellows, medical residents, Assistant Professors) from under resourced communities

Do I have to be a member of ASBMR to apply for the THRIVE Program?

No, applications will be accepted from members and non-members.

What is the monthly time commitment of the program?

In year one, participants should expect to spend up to two hours a month (i.e., for the quarterly group sessions and one-to-one mentoring).

In year two, participants should expect to spend approximately three hours per month (i.e., for the monthly group sessions and one-to-one mentoring).

Additionally, participants are expected to attend the ASBMR Annual Meeting each year. Please see the “For Applicants” section for full details.

How are the mentors chosen for the THRIVE Scholars?

Mentors are chosen by aligned research interest with the Scholar or by request. Mentors should be senior ASBMR members.

I reside outside the United States. Am I eligible to apply?

Unfortunately, this program is limited to US citizens and legal residents. ASBMR is dedicated to providing professional opportunities for members at all career levels and locations. You can access additional ASBMR professional development programs in the ASBMR Knowledge Hub.
